Ok so we know that top of the range (and even bottom of the range) kit can be expensive. We also know that you could do a race pretty cheaply in terms of what kit you use, but what about the races themselvesz
An average cost seems to be around the £80 for a lot of triathlons. Only costing £10-20 more if you go from Sprint to Olympic. There is an argument that if you want to get your money’s worth, you should go for the Olympic, but that’s another story.
There are smaller, more local events which can obviously cost less and have a much more intimate feel, but if you did want to do one of the more mainstream type events, it’s going to cost you. Or if you want to race in some historic grounds, it’s going to cost you.
This isn’t aimed at any one event in particular, but having just signed up for my favourite one in September, there are two other events I’d like to have done that month (on concurrent weekends) but it would have set me back over £400 once you take into account all the additional travel etc.
£400 to put myself through some pain. Ok, and some glory too! But why does it need to cost so much?
If you’re only doing one event as a bit of a bucket list thing, you can justify it pretty easily. If you’re racing for age group status you could probably justify it too. But, if like me, you just bloody enjoy it and want to do as many as you can, can you justify it? Maybe you could argue you could. But it’s going to cost you and I’m not sure my family would be too happy with me taking money out of the holiday fund to do more triathlons.
I understand events cost money. I work in the events and exhibitions business, so I fully get it, but I wonder if the cost can be passed from athlete to sponsor, or other creative ways of making money and covering costs?
My hope with TriPals is to encourage as many people as possible to get into our wonderful world of triathlon. I’d love for people to share the same excitement I get after crossing each finishing line. So I wonder if we can change things up a bit…
Plans are a foot…
Stay tuned….
