We get a lot of our inspiration from others. A really simple way to find that sometimes, is flicking through Instagram. We say a post Jeremy had put up about buying his wife her first tri bike and we wanted to ask them how they do it. To follow Jeremy and their progress on Instagram, click here.
So, First off, Jeremy, how long have you been into triathlon and what sort of events are you doing (distances)?
Jeremy-I’ve been doing Triathlons for only about a year. I started just being fit and bought my first bike. I ended up upgrading a few times very quick. I progressed fairly quick with my training and the small races I’ve done hit podium, which hooked, lined, and sinkered me all the way in. lol My schedule has been 2 local sprint Tri’s a half Ironman a 5K and a Half Marathon next I already signed up for is Chattanooga Full IronMan in September. I have a few sponsors so I’m sure I’ll be doing some small races in between also.
What got you into triathlon? Did you have a sport background before tri?
Jeremy- I got into triathlons just looking for something different besides running or riding my bike around. My sports background was always Football, baseball, and basketball. My wife, Griselle, has a sports back ground also in basketball.
How long did your wife Griselle, have to put up with you talking about triathlons before she decided to get involved?
She has been my rock the whole time I’ve been interested in them. She has supported me every step of the way. Even with the money I’ve spent on bike and equipment the I “HAD” to have. She just recently started thinking of doing one on her own within the last couple weeks. So since she’s supported me, I went and bought her a bike so she can be legit and hopefully gets into the training and racing part of it like me.
Has Griselle done any races yet? If not, what’s on the calendar for this year?
Griselle hasn’t done any triathlons yet, but she has done a 5k with me. I basically just signed her up and told her a day before we needed to go. I think that’s what good husbands do right? lol She does have plans to do a local sprint and possibly next year do a Half IronMan
Before Griselle got her hands on her first tri bike, what was she using on the road?
She had a hybrid bike that she rode but never has done any triathlons or even done any training.
Are you doing any events together or are you both shouting encouragement at each other from the lines?
I won’t be doing any races at first with her because I want to be there to support her every step of the way.
It seems like a husband and wife team might be the ultimate TriPals! How do you guys find training together?
We love training together. Before, while I was on my runs she would ride behind me riding the bike. And sit out in my Pain Cave with me when I did rides on the trainer. There were a few times she came to the pool with me and swam and even just took videos for me so I could see if my stroke or anything was off that I needed to work on. Now we get to spend the time together and both have a goal we are working toward.
Is breakfast, lunch and dinner getting boring with all the tri talk?
J- I don’t think tri talk would ever get old. I personally think she gets sick of me finding new things that I “need” to make me faster, but I’m hoping she will understand it soon.
G – I don’t get tired of listening to his excitement about triathlons and I just try to roll my eyes when he starts needing extra stuff that I know is just for show at this point. Lol
Assuming you may swim/bike/run at different paces, when out in the pool, on the road or treading paths, how do you keep together? What sort of training do you do?
In the pool we just swim at our own pace and also in open water swims, but we always come together at the end to show each other our improvements we’ve made. Biking is hard, her pace is so much different than mine. Usually I will ride during the day, she will ride in the afternoon, on my run days she rides with me. Her ride pace is a little faster but it pushes me to catch up or run a little longer stride. On her run days I still run with her just to loosen the legs out.
What’s the best thing about training together? And the worst?
J – Best thing for me is having my wife enjoy a sport that I have a passion for. Being able to help her with the things that I’ve learned along the way, watching her grow into a well rounded triathlete herself. Now the worst thing……. Having to split my budget with her.. This is not a cheap sport so now I can’t use “it only cost a couple hundred dollars” phrase anymore. Shes caught on to me. Lol
G – Having something in common to do and talk about. Being able to support each other. The worst thing- I have baby legs standing a tall 5’1” and him 6’4” I beat myself up wondering why I work so hard to keep up with him even while he’s running and I’m on my bike. I’m competitive so my training always turns into a race.

Thank you Jeremy and Griselle, that’s a pretty honest and open story of training together! We hope you guys have a fantastic season together and look forward to catching up again soon!
