The first week of running

I’ve mentioned it before…but I don’t run.

Talking to a personal trainer, he said to start small and build on it week after week. Don’t kill yourself early. Don’t peak to soon. Don’t over do it – you’ll get bored!

So the first run, was just trying to get some short distances under mybelt.

Literally talking 3km runs into the South Downs behind where we live. They felt like hell.

3km you might think isn’t that far and now, I would agree with you. But, if you’re not used to any sort of running activity, it hurts. It hurts your lungs (opening them up properly), it hurts your shins (inactive running = killer shin splints) and, well, there isn’t really another hurt, it just all hurt!

But after 3/4 runs like this in week 1, I was enjoying it. I loved being up on the downs. I loved being outside. I loved the fresh air (when I wasn’t drooling out of my nose / mouth / general face area). I loved running past the horse stables. I loved the fact that I wanted to run further!

I loved the fact that we signed up for a tri and were going to give it our all to get it done. And not just get across the line done, we want to run across that line knowing we’ve worked our backsides off to get there.
